Lucky
it is simple, given how many seem to go wrong.
People
buy these cars as reliable economical town family shifters.
Very
rarely therefore do they get a chance to go on a long drive
and go through a regeneration cycle. Simple result - on school
runs etc they just clog up!
The
owner of this car who had not had it long expressed a bit of
"disappointment" to the Vauxhall dealer who then said
- "well really you should never of brought this car in
the first place, its not for driving around town and short runs"
Well...whatever
you think - it is now. DPF removed and being the 150bhp version
it has now been remapped
The
removal of course was something in the region of £1000
cheaper, but it makes no difference to us. Our labour rate would
be the same if we were to bolt a new one on so...
Of course
after the DPF (Particulate filter) is removed and replaced with
quality T304 stainless bypass pipe that we custom fabricate
in house on the car - the ECU does have to be updated to include
a DPF delete function. This will stop the error messages ever
re occurring as 1) the DPF will never fill up (doesn't have
one) and 2) it will never try to regenerate - to find out it
doesn't have one. Its a bit tricky with the Bosch EDC16C9 ECU
using a Can BUS protocol but nothing we cant do. Want the EGR
valve disabled? No problem!
If you
do not remap the car after - the ECU will try to regenerate
the filter by pumping lots of fuel into the exhaust system to
get it hot enough to break down the soot deposits...and as there
is no filter...it will just smoke like hell and could over a
period of time damage your engine. Under no circumstances would
this ever be a good idea.
End
result, an error free ECU, no DPF problems and a hike to 190
- 200 bhp and 408nm of torque - an all together more driveable
and pleasant place to be. Smoother and saving 10% on fuel
over a standard 170 BHP car.
Just
to put that into perspective - that's is the same BHP and a
Lancia Integrale and 8 MORE NM of torque than a 2008 model BMW
M3... And all well within the limits of this engine, turbo and
transmission. This engine is the same unit used in the 1.9 Alfa
Romeo Brera, Alfa Romeo 159 and Alfa GT, Saab 93 and more!.
