Performance Air Filters
K&N
Filters - performance panel filters.
The air filter of the car is the
first point at which air is drawn into the engine and as with
the exhaust, the original manufacturer set ups usually do a fairly
good job of providing a restriction to gas flow and any restriction
to gas flow will impede performance. There are various ways to
overcome this and unleash extra brake horse power from the engine.
Firstly you can keep the standard intake system and replace the
standard filter element with a K&N element.
The standard air filters are made of paper and whilst do a good
job of filtering the incoming air of foreign bodies, it doesn't
flow particularly well. K&N Performance filter elements
are made using either cotton gauze or a foam type filter.
Either of these types of filter will flow far better than a paper
filter and in many applications will improve power. The filter
itself however may not be the entirety of the restriction, as
the design of how the air travel to, through, and from the filter
can also play a part in how well gas flows from the atmosphere
through to the throttle body.

Induction Kits
The next stage is to replace the standard
air filter with a K&N Induction kit, the
standard housing and intake design. An induction kit provides
the opportunity to extract more power still from the engine by
flowing with as little restriction as possible. A by product of
this is a lovely throaty roar from the engine at WOT (wide open
throttle) and sharpened throttle response.
There are many designs of K&N
induction kits, short tract, long track, open filter, enclosed
filter, but what works best really depends on the car. The most
important thing to consider when choosing a K&N intake is
where its drawing its air from. Air temperature is hugely important
in making horsepower and whilst the warmer the air the more power
you lose, the colder the air the more power you make.

Whatever
K&N intake design you decide upon getting cold air
to it is of up most important. this can be achieved by using a
cold air feed from behind the front bumper, but is best addressed
using a closed filter design that will act as a heat shield from
the heat of the engine and will only draw air in from where you
locate the air feed.
One thing is for certain, replacing restrictive
standard parts with a K&N system has the potential
to unleash extra horse power, and replacing the air filter
is a simple and very effective way of doing that...... plus it
will make a fantastic noise! If you would like to discuss K&N
options for your car, give me a call or drop me an email and I
will be happy to talk over your requirements.
